Fertility

Both men and women can encounter fertility challenges, and these challenges can take physical and emotional tolls on a couple. 

Men – Naturopathic medicine can help optimize sperm motility, morphology and overall counts.

Women – Naturopathic medicine can help regulate the menstrual cycle and egg quality. 

Naturopathic medicine addresses fertility issues in both men and women by looking for the root cause and addressing imbalances. This includes looking at diet, food sensitivities, inflammation, environmental toxins, chemicals, nutrient deficiencies, autoimmunity and thyroid imbalances. 

PMS

Premenstrual syndrome is a combination of physical and emotional symptoms that can affect a woman in the days or weeks leading up to her period. Some of the most common symptoms experienced are cramping, bloating, irritability, anxiety, depression and food cravings. In some women, PMS is so severe that it’s called Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) and is used to describe PMS with extreme anger or sadness each month.

The naturopathic approach to PMS includes functional lab tests, addressing the root cause of the hormone imbalances, inflammation, diet and gut health. 

PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, is a common cause of menstrual irregularity and infertility that affects up to 10% of women.

PCOS diagnosis:  Requires two of the following three symptoms of PCOS:

  • Oligo-ovulation or anovulation – Means you ovulate less often than you should or you don’t ovulate at all. Many times this presents itself as menstrual irregularities like very long cycles.
  • Hyperandrogenism – Means high levels of male hormones, present themselves as extra hair growth in the areas of the upper lip, chin, and around your nipples, and acne around your jawline.
  • Polycystic ovaries – When there are one more cysts on your ovaries and are visible by ultrasound.

There are a some other features that may be part of a PCOS picture, including: Obesity, Metabolic dysfunction, Type II diabetes, Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, Mood disorders like depression and anxiety. 

Naturopathic medicine approach includes functional lab testing, addresses diet & lifestyle, exercise, weight loss and insulin sensitivity, decreasing inflammation along with nutritional and herbal medicine implementation. 

Perimenopause & Menopause

During perimenopause a woman’s hormones change and fluctuate considerately, that is seen in changes in their menstrual cycle. As women enter menopause the levels of reproductive hormones decrease leading to an array of symptoms such as: 

Irregular periods, hot flashes, vaginal dryness and thinning, skin changes, fatigue and sleep disturbances, decreased libido, depression, anxiety, mood swings and bone loss.

Autoimmunity

Autoimmune diseases are conditions in which your immune system mistakenly attacks your body instead of foreign threats and diseases. Patients with autoimmune diseases can experience symptoms such as fatigue, joint and muscle pain or swelling, recurring fever, swollen glands, digestive issues, and more. Examples of autoimmune diseases include rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, irritable bowel disease, lupus, hashimotos and more. There are more than 80 types of autoimmune diseases and they disproportionately affect more women than men. Of the 8% of the population that are affected by autoimmune disease, 75% of the cases are seen in women.

Hashimotos

Hashimoto’s is a condition in which the immune system attacks and destroys the thyroid gland. Overtime this leads to a gradual loss of thyroid function. Hashimoto’s is 7 times more common in women than in men.  Most common experienced symptoms include: weight gain, fatigue, cold intolerance, constipation, hair loss, depression, heavy periods, muscle aches, poor concentration, dry skin and more. Some patients experience Hashitoxicosis, this occurs when the immune system attack on the thyroid causes an excessive amount of thyroid hormone to be released for days or weeks. This excess hormone leads to hyperthyroid symptoms such as sweating, insomnia, palpitations, restlessness. After this period of hyperthyroid-like symptoms the individual returns back to feeling all the hypothyroid-like symptoms which can feel confusing and be draining on the individuals physical and emotional state.

IBS

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is an very common digestive disorder characterized by abdominal pain and distension, changes in bowel habits (constipation, diarrhea, or both), and is usually a long-term affliction. Diagnosis requires the symptoms to be present for at least six months, occurring at least once per week.

Naturopathic approach: Address food sensitivities & triggers, stress, hormones and microbial imbalance. 

Leaky Gut

Leaky gut also known as intestinal permeability, is a term used to describe the condition in which the tight junctions binding the enterocytes (intestinal cells) of the small intestine together have been compromised. This leads to the passage of food particles, substances such as toxins, viruses, bacteria,  etc, into the bloodstream.

Symptoms experienced are:  Gas, bloating, cramping, food sensitivities, brain fog, aches and pains, and skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, acne, hormonal imbalances, and so on.

Causes of leaky gut include:

•  Low gastric acid production
•  Chronic maldigestion
•  Food allergen impact on bowel absorptive surfaces
•  Bacterial overgrowth or imbalances (dysbiosis)
•  Pathogenic bacteria, yeast or parasites and related toxic irritants
•  The use of NSAIDs and antibiotics

Environmental Toxcity
